With the NBA Draft coming up, the Sportsblahg is getting you geared up with a little quiz game. Based on the widely successful “Is It A Gang Symbol” game we played earlier, we will provide you with statistics and you can tell us if we’ve got a STUD or a DUD:
Player #1:
Our First player on the list averaged a measly 16.5 points per game during his college career. Although when you back that up with 12+ rebounds per game, the stats seem to get better, as averaging a double double might. He had a .321 3-point shooting percentage in college, but only a .689 free throw shooting percentage.
You Got A: STUD - You have drafted Mr. Fundamentals himself, Tim Duncan. Leading his team to numerous NBA Championships and a perennial contender, you have a just drafted a player that is going to take your team from zero to hero. Way to go!
Player #2:
Player #2 comes directly out of high school. He is consistently rated as the “best high school player in his class”. He attends one of the most competitive high school basketball programs in the country (who have already turned out two other NBA players in the last couple of years). He set the all time rebounding and shot blocking records for the school and finished 2nd all time in scoring. He was also a starter on the McDonald’s High School All-American team.
You Got A: DUD - You, like Michael Jordan just drafted Kwame Brown, probably the most over hyped 1st pick ever and quite possibly the biggest flop ever to receive the distinction of being first in the draft. Since his drafting in 2001 he has played (and I use that term loosely) for 3 different teams, Washington, LA and now the Grizzlies. The most recent trade on February 1st from LA to Memphis has resulted in an investigation by the league because no one thinks that Brown is worth anything CLOSE to Pau Gasol. But after watching Gasol in the NBA finals, maybe the Grizzlies got the better deal!
Player #3:
Our third player is a transfer student from a small school to a smaller school, but has some big stats to back them up. Despite averaging just 13.5 points per game, he averaged 7.5 rebounds per game and almost exactly 3 blocks per game. This player led his team to a spot in the NCAA tournament his Junior year, one of the only times the team had ever gone to the big dance. The most amazing thing about this particular player is that he didn’t start playing basketball until the age of 17.
You Got A: DUD - Agh, you just drafted Michael Olowokandi! Despite his respectable 8.3 ppg career scoring average, he’s not exactly what you would call a “smart pick” with the #1 overall selection. Although he did manage to shoot .483 his rookie season on his way to 2nd place rookie of the year voting. It might have helped if he had played before age 17, so he could’ve learned how to shoot at the charity strip (career .597 free throw percentage).
Player #4:
Similar to player #3, player four comes from a mid-major team, but still flaunts impressive stats. He averaged 22 points per game in two seasons with his club including 11.2 rebounds per games and 2.5 assists. Despite all the good, the player plays for a coach whose character is suspect at best. Regardless, his team just won the NCAA final four while setting two records, largest margin of victory (30pts) and most points scored in a championship game (103pts). He does have pending investigations by the NCAA for both recruiting violations and misconduct while at his school.
You Got A: STUD - Congratualtions, you just drafted Grandmama, Larry Johnson. LJ had a solid career in the NBA, winning rookie of the year honors and playing in 2 All-Star games (a first for the then Charlotte Hornets). Johnson played on Dream Team II and had a chance to play with the New York Knicks in 1999 for the NBA championship. Despite not winning Johnson won on another level, appearing in such award winning films as “Space Jams” and “Eddie”. He also played Steve Urkel’s teammate in an episode of “Family Matters”. If that’s not stud status, I don’t know what is.
Well that should get you started on your way towards becoming a GM and hopefully not making the same mistakes! The NBA Draft will be held on Thursday June 26th from 7pm - 12am at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
