We Take Sports Seriously. But Not Ourselves.

Seeing as today is April 1st, typically known to the jokester world as April Fools Day, I thought it would be funny to write some completely bogus news story and try and circulate it around the internet. But then I realized something, have you looked at the top stories in Major league baseball lately? I think there’s a higher power playing an April Fool’s day joke on us already:

  • The Washington Nationals are #1: That’s right, not just #1 in the NL East, not just #1 in the National League, but the BEST TEAM IN BASEBALL!! At 2-0, the Nationals have won two tight games (one at home, one on the road). Now let’s be honest with ourselves, this is bound to not last (or maybe it might, who remembers the 2006 season?). But it certainly is probably a sticker shock for most that the top team in the major leagues this season was out of the ‘07 playoffs by July.
  • Xavier Nady leads the Majors in Home Runs: Sure he’s tied for that lead, but if this continues, expect Mr. Nady to get tested every other day for the ‘roids. Although if you watch his batting stance, he kind looks like he’s partial to that injection position!!
  • cubs fan cryingThe New York Yankees are winless: Granted they are 0-0, but still we’re technically a week or so into the major league season and the Yankees have yet to win a game. Also, have you heard the new phrase in Yankeedom? It is something along the lines of “Righting the baseball universe”. Seriously? What is wrong with it? Just because you haven’t won a series in since 2000 doesn’t mean that the world is flat all of a sudden! How do you think the Cubs feel? They’re going on 100 (that’s more than Boston) years since they last won a championship. Seriously, generations have come and gone in the time the Cubs last won a World Series. You think they are saying the universe is wrong? Well, in all fairness, they’re beyond that now, they blame anything (besides management, coaching and themselves) for the continuance of this milestone record.
  • Jake Peavy has better batting stats then pitching stats: Last night against the Houston Astros, Peavy, normally a stud pitcher, went 7 innings gave up 3 hits, walked 3 and struckout 4 for the win. A decent stat line except when you compare it to his batting line: 2-2, a walk and 2 RBI’s. That’s better than the #2, 3 and 4 hitters on the Astros last night (Pence 0-4, Berkman 0-2 and Lee 0-4). Perhaps though it was the fact that buddy Roy Oswalt was throwing him fastballs down the middle of the plate that allowed for him to do what he did.
  • Braves are the worst team in baseball: A team that most “experts” have predicted to be in the post-season (and some in the world series) is not starting the season out well. After losing in the bottom of the ninth to the Nationals on Opening Night, they follow it up by having their bullpen collapse again to the Pirates of all teams, losing 12-11.
  • president bush first pitchPresident George W. Bush a better announcer than Tim McCarver: Ok, well many know of the passion with which the Sportsblahg (not just the Nate) dislike Time McCarver, but if you missed the Nationals game on Sunday Night, I thought the present gave some great (and actually factual) commentary on the shot. If you missed it, the phrase was along the lines of “if he’d have thrown the pitch I did, it wouldn’t have been a home run”. That may in fact have been the most truthful words out of his mouth in some time.

I don’t think I could’ve made up better headlines myself. I think that regardless of your religious views, there’s got to be a higher power out there, and that individual has quite the sense of humor!!!
