Injuries seem to be catching up with the Colts, the Cowboys showed that until the Giants realize that Terrell Owens is on their team they’re the best in the NFC, and the Chargers may be learning to win in spite of Norv Turner. But the top of the league is so not what the Darren McFadden Sweepstakes is all about.
It’s about looking for hope when there is none, finding a reason to live for tomorrow when there isn’t any, and searching for meaning amongst the meaninglesness of it all. The Darren McFadden Sweepstakes is about life, and the way many of us just trying to get by in this crazy world live it.
So without further justification for this mockery of professional football incompetence:
Miami Dolphins (0-9)
The good news: Tied the spread. Overcame a safety. Jesse Chatman has not been atrocious.
The bad news: Cleo Lemon is still the quarterback, and the old Dolphins are getting restless. Some are even threatening to suit up.
Outlook: Their Super Bowl is December 2nd against the Jets in what may be their one true hope to avoid the collar.
St. Louis Rams (1-8)
The good news: VICTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Steven Jackson is back, along with some hope in Nelly’s hometown.
The bad news: None, really. It isn’t like McFadden is a consensus, no-brainer number one, like Mario Williams. What?
Outlook: Look for the Rams to continue to put themselves in worse draft position by playing spoiler against weaker defensive clubs with their playmakers on offense.
New York Jets (1-8)
The good news: Did not lose this week.
The bad news: Only because the bye threw an inexplicable goal-line interception to Darrelle Revis.
Outlook: Looking disturbingly like Notre Dame, where a ballyhooed Bill Belichick assistant is running out of excuses as the fans see the same mistakes over and over again.
Oakland Raiders (2-7)
The good news: Actually led the defending NFC champs for three quarters.
The bad news: Don’t call it a comeback, Rex Grossman has been here for years. Rex. Grossman.
Outlook: So, why can’t you play JaMarcus Russell, exactly?
San Francisco 49ers (2-6)
The good news: They haven’t played yet.
The bad news: They’ll be stinking ESPN up on Monday night worse than Chris Berman’s flop sweat. Also, now Dick Nolan can now join Bill Walsh in rolling over in their graves at this team’s ineptitude. What, too soon?
Outlook: Just a young team with major growing pains. Maybe one of these days they’ll recognize the innate futility surrounding the Seahawks and win this division.
