I would like to start off by saying that it feels great to get the opportunity to spew whatever trivial sports knowledge I know in a place where perhaps people will read it, if for no other reason than that they read Chris’ blog.
My first foray into this realm begins with the cable network Versus, formally OLN, formally the Outdoor Life. This channel has had more name changes than Prince.
I was at the Cal-Berkeley/Oregon State game on Saturday. A buddy of mine who works for Versus was kind enough to get me tickets (I should probably stop bashing them) so I could sit in the front row and enjoy the action. Unfortunately that “action” was of the losing variety and even worse, it was of the “freshman mistake” variety. But after I got over the shock of the game, I realized that this is the second time in seven days that a ranked team has been upset on Versus. So it got me thinking, is this some sort of curse?
Cal lost this weekend to Oregon State on Versus. USC lost to Stanford last weekend on Versus. Utah beat then-#11 UCLA on Versus on September 15th. Lowly Iowa State beat Iowa on Versus that same day. On Thursday, TCU plays host to Utah. Is that grounds for a “Versus Curse?” Probably not, but Saturday, Texas (#22) plays Baylor on Versus. Texas leads that all-time series 70-22-4.
If Texas falls, then perhaps the curse is real. But let’s be serious for a moment: this is still years away from being on the same level as the Madden curse. Speaking of which, when is Vince Young going to go down?

Very clever theory! I believe it. If this turns out to be true low ranked teams should bid to be shown on Versus.

Vince Young got hurt last night… This curse seems to have some legs, too, though.
