If we could take a break from the Joe Torre madness for a second (hey, how dare the Red Sox overshadow this momentous news by daring to extend the series!) to turn our attention to some college football, three straight number twos have now taken the pipe.
In case you weren’t paying attention, or you think they don’t play college football here on the East Coast, Rutgers upset #2 South Florida 30-27 behind the running of Ray Rice and a depleted South Florida offensive line, allowing the Scarlet Knights to pressure the pocket.
(Does this show the depth of the Big East? Of course not, USF was probably just a media-hyped fraud. After all, they’re not in the SEC or Big Ten or even Big 12. Now if you don’t believe that, you’re probably a reasoned and objective college football fan. If you do, you’re probably one of the loonies who harasses Stewart Mandel on his si.com blog with incoherent posts devoid of logic and reasoning.)
In any case, Boston College, Oklahoma, LSU, South Carolina, and Oregon, you will all want to win. But not too impressively, unless you find out Michigan State is winning. Which, being Michigan State and often having nothing better to do than screw up someone’s national championship season, might well happen.
As an avid hater of the BCS, I am loving every minute of this. A title game of Hawaii versus a two-loss LSU team who just lost in the SEC championship game doesn’t seem like a realistic possibility, but something insane along those lines is coming this year. Just you wait.
In the meantime, be wary of the fates of USC, Cal, and South Florida in the past three weeks. Beneath this uneasiness lies the silver medal of the college football polls.

Wait, USF’s #2 ranking was a result of media hype? What about the BCS computer rankings? And how do you say that about USF and NOT say that about Ohio State - clearly one of the most overrated #1 ranked teams in recent history?

Well, maybe the sarcasm didn’t quite come across there. I don’t believe that USF was overrated, their resume was worthy of their #2 ranking. I was just mocking what a lot of SEC and Big 10 fans truly believe last night’s result meant.
